Indian Naval Ships Deployed to Singapore for IMR, IMDEX17, SIMBEX17 and AUSINDEX17

Indian Naval Ships Deployed to Singapore for IMR, IMDEX17, SIMBEX17 and AUSINDEX17

INS Sahyadri, INS Shivalik, INS Jyoti and INS Kamorta are on a port visit to Singapore in pursuance of India’s Act East policy. The visit started on 12th May and go on until 21st May 2017.

The ships will participate in the International Maritime Review (IMR) and Maritime Defence Exhibition & Conference (IMDEX-17) during the visit. It will also witness the visit of CNS Admiral Sunil Lanba on the events ashore during IMR as a part of RSN’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

This deployment of ships to the Southern Indian Ocean is under the command of Rear Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, YSM, VSM, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.

The ships would make port calls at Singapore, Kuantan (Malaysia), Jakarta and Surabaya (Indonesia), Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) and Fremantle (Australia) during the course of the deployment.

After the IMR and IMDEX-17, the four Indian Naval Ships and an Indian Navy Long Range Maritime Patrol and Anti-Submarine Warfare Aircraft P-8I Poseidon would exercise with the Republic of Singapore Navy and Republic of Singapore Air Force as part of SIMBEX-17 (Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise).

SIMBEX-17 will be the 24th edition of the annual maritime bilateral exercise between the two countries, being held since 1994. It aims to further cement the defence cooperation between the two countries.

Subsequently, the Indian Navy will take part in the second edition of Australia-India Naval Exercise, AUSINDEX-17.

About the Indian Naval Ships being deployed:

  1. INS Sahyadri is a multi-role stealth frigate commanded by Captain Anil Jaggi while INS Kamorta is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette commanded by Commander Vipin Gupta. Both ships are indigenously designed and built.
  2. INS Satpura made the last visit by an Indian Naval Ship to Singapore in September 2016.
  3. Indian Naval assets have been increasingly deployed in recent times to address the main maritime concerns of the region including the recent India-Indonesia CORPAT.
  4. The current deployment will consolidate inter-operability and forge strong bonds of friendship between India and Singapore.
